The Highly Sensitive Business Owner: Module 6

I remember this one afternoon I was on a zoom call with my friend Dorothy, who I love and who used to be my work wife at the sexist company I got fired from when I first started my business, AND who just happens to be the very first person every to enroll in The Highly Sensitive Business Owner™!

Anyway. We were just catching up, talking business, but then we started talking about a client we had in common, and she wanted me to meet this other marketing guy she’d brought in.

“In fact,” she said, “he’s my next call! Why don’t you stay on a couple minutes and then you can meet him!”

Ok, sure. I did it, even though she and I had already been talking for over an hour.

And this guy (I mean, he was nice enough, but I was just not ready for a bro marketer situation right then), he started interrogating me about my background and who my influences were and then he was like “oh, I’ll just look you up on Facebook,” so then I had to explain that I’m not really ON facebook, which reminded me how much I hate Mark Zuckerberg, which brought up all my feelings of how I don’t fit in to our society but also that society is really fucked up and bros like this just don’t even know… 😐

But also I felt like this guy was challenging me & the work that I’d done for this shared client, and even though I only talked to him for like five minutes, when I got off the phone my heart was racing and I had to sit outside in the sun for several minutes, just sitting there.

I didn’t get any work done for the rest of the day.

That was the first time I actually FELT my high sensitivity in action, at work, with full awareness of what was happening.

It wasn’t pleasant, but it was a milestone. This is why I started blocking off every other week to be phone-call free, and just generally regulating my phone time overall.

This, among other things, is the kind of stuff we’ll be getting into in Module 6 of the Highly Sensitive Business Owner™—what burns you out, and how you might space it out in a way that works for you, your team, and your clients.
